LAST!
LAST! Stop doing your homework, donât worry about papers, donât pay your bills, donât make weekend plans, donât even finish applying to MIT, thereâs no point. This is goodbye, this is my last post. I know what youâre thinking âBut Chris, why on Earth wouldnât shirk my responsibilities? What do you mean this is the end?â Three words friends: Large. Hadron. Collider. Yes boys and girls, the doomsday device built under the guise of solving physics goes online today (errâ¦technically itâs already been online since this morning, but weâll ignore that for the sake of sensationalism). In case you arent convinced of the colliders sinister intent, take a look at the thing. From for blog Whoa, yea its big. In fact its the largest single object ever built. Only thing you cant see is the engine room where they feed it babies, or so I assume. Ok but seriously, what makes this so special? why is it the end of the world? Well in a very simplified nutshell, the LHC seeks to reproduce scenarios similar to the beginning of the universe (read:Big Bang). In doing so they hope to find this one particular particle (hehe thats fun to say) that can help rationalize gravity on the quantum level, and thus finish the standard model a.k.a The Unified Theory, a.k.a Physics. Thats right, it seeks to finish physics (in which case, Ill have to switch my major). The interesting thing is that this thing is so powerful and so totally unprecedented in terms of the reactions that there are possibilities that it could destroy the world in a variety of fashions. Theres even been injunctions filed against starting it up, and death threats against scientists operating the device. Of course, scientists assure us that there really isnt anything to worry about, that the probabilities are enormously underwhelming. (Then again, of course theyd say that, after all, if theyre wrong, whos going to be around to call them liars?) One thing that is agreeable is that the LHC stands poised to change the world. If theyre right, then the Higgs Boson particle will help complete the unified theory, but maybe whats most exciting is the counter-possibility. If it turns out that there is no particle, that means somewhere weve been wrong and it will still foster a huge advance in our understanding of physics. Either way its nothing short of breath-takingly exciting (though as a piece of social advice, its not really a good topic for party-talk). Oh and I nearly forgot, the little company whos in charge of this thing, CERN? Yea,at MIT you can do an IROP (close cousin to the UROP) study there If Im ever fortunate enough to make it over there while Im here at MIT, Ill be sure to let you know what the apocalypse looks like firsthand. P.S. in light of the dwindling time we have left here on Earth, I propose that instead of being so proud to be the first person to comment, you should all try and be the last person to comment LAST

Who Was the Spanish Modernist Antoni GaudÃÂ
Antoni Gaudà (born June 25, 1852) was Spains genius architect who combined sculpted designs with new building technologies well before computers made it seem easy. Leading the Spanish Modernist movement, Gaudà has been linked with Gothicism (sometimes called warped Gothicism), Art Nouveau, and Surrealism. He was also influenced by Oriental styles, nature, sculpture, and a desire to go beyond anything that had ever been done before. Defying labels, Antoni Gaudà s work might be simply called Gaudà -ism. Born Antoni Plà cid Guillem Gaudà Cornetà somewhere in Catalonia, possibly Baix Camp, Tarragona, Spain, the young Gaudi was stricken with a rheumatic problem that made walking painful. He often missed school and had little interaction with other children, but he had ample time to study nature. While seeking his degree in architecture at Escuela Tà ©cnica Superior de Arquitectura in Barcelona, Gaudà also studied philosophy, history, and economics. He came to believe that differences in architecture were caused by society and politics, rather than aesthetics. Gaudà was granted the title of Architect and presented his first major project, the Matarà ³ Cooperative (a housing project for factory workers), at the Paris World Fair in 1878. Far ahead of his time, only a small portion of the project was actually built, but Gaudà s name became known. He soon met Eusebi Gà ¼ell, who would become a very close friend as well as a patron. This meeting was extremely fortuitous as Gà ¼ell trusted his friends genius completely and never limited or tried to change the architects vision during his many projects. In 1883, Gaudà began work on his greatest project, the Sagrada Familia, a Barcelona church whose construction was started in 1882 by Francisco de Paula del Villar. For nearly 30 years, Gaudà worked on Sagrada Familia and other projects simultaneously, until 1911, when he decided to devote himself exclusively to the church. During the last year of his life, Gaudà lived in his studio at the construction side of Sagrada Familia. Tragically, in June 1926, Gaudà was run over by a tram. Because he was poorly dressed, he was not recognized and taxi drivers refused to take a vagabond to the hospital ââ¬â they were later fined by the police. Gaudà died five days later, on June 12, 1926, and was buried in the crypt of the building to which he had devoted 44 years of his life, the as-yet unfinished Sagrada Familia. During Gaudà s lifetime, official organizations rarely recognized his talent. The City of Barcelona often tried (unsuccessfully) to stop or limit Gaudà s work because it exceeded city regulations, and the only project the City ever assigned him was that of designing streetlights. He received the Building of the Year award for his least impressive building, Casa Calvet. Important Buildings Gaudis portfolio of architecture is a study in how the world moved into modernism, from the 19th to 20th centuries. The natural shape of the entrance gate to Finca Miralles (1901-1902) reminds the Barcelona tourist of how Art Nouveau moved the arts to modernism. Casa Calvet (1898-1900) with its sculpted ironwork and spiraling columns seems to take on a more Baroque flavor, not to be outdone by the famous Casa Milà (1906-1910), also known as La Pedrera; with its sculpted walls, La Pedrera could easily be confused as a modernist early work of Frank Gehry or a parametric design of Zaha Hadid. Casa Vicens (1883-1888) in Barcelona and El Capricho (1883-1885) in Comillas are two of Gaudis earliest works, expressing the colors and elaborate tile work that would define his later work, such as Casa Batllà ³ (1904-1906) and the projects for Eusebi Gà ¼ell, such as Palau Gà ¼ell (1886-1890) and Parque Gà ¼ell (1900-1914) in Barcelona. In contrast, the focus of Gaudis Colegio Teresiano (1888-1890) in Barcelona is less on color and more on exaggerating the Gothic arch, bending it into a parabola. The neo-Gothicà Casa Botines (1891-1892) in nearby Leà ³n takes on a similar approach. Gaudi began work on Sagrada Familia in 1882, and it is still under construction. The Sagrada Familia School (1908-1909) was built for the children of the workers. Influences Observation of an artists lifes work gives some indication of artistic influences, even for a man as ecclectic as Antoni Gaudà . As already mentioned, Gaudi was aware of the artists on the cusp of modernism and surrealism. At the same time, he was cognizant of neo-Gothicism, Eugà ¨ne Viollet-le-Duc, and medieval French architecture. Feeling the effects of the Industrial Revolution, Gaudi embraced the back to natural things movement advanced by William Morris, especially buying into John Ruskins sentiment that Ornament is the origin of architecture. Gaudi was influenced by the shapes-taken-from-nature stylings of Art Nouveau and became one of the first designers of Organic architecture. He played with color, geometry, and was shaped by his study of Oriental structures. The basis of Gaudà s inspiration In his later years was more personal ââ¬â his religion and Catalan nationalism directed his later works. Legacy UNESCO World Heritage Centre sites seven Spanish properties designed by Gaudi for Outstanding Universal Value. The Works of Antoni Gaudà , sites UNESCO, ...is an exceptional creative synthesis of several 19th-century artistic schools, such as the Arts and Crafts movement, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Rationalism, and is directly associated with the cultural apogee of Catalonia. Gaudà also presaged and influenced many forms and techniques of 20th-century Modernism. Although his works are considered eclectic and personal, Gaudi is best-known for the exceptional creative contribution of this architect to the development of architecture and construction technology in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Quotes Attributed to Antoni Gaudà Originality consists of returning to the origin. Thus, originality means returning, through ones resources, to the simplicity of the early solutions.Everything comes from the great book of nature.Artists do not need monuments erected for them because their works are their monuments. Scarlet Letter Essays (474 words) - English-language Films
Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is all about symbolism. People and objects are symbolic of events and thoughts. Throughout the course of the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Hester, Pearl, and Arthur Dimmesdale to signify Puritanic and Romantic philosophies. Hester Prynne, through the eyes of the Puritans, is an extreme sinner; she has gone against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this irrevocably harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life. However, the Romantic philosophies of Hawthorne put down the Puritanic beliefs. She is a beautiful, young woman who has sinned, but is forgiven. Hawthorne portrays Hester as "divine maternity" and she can do no wrong. Not only Hester, but the physical scarlet letter, a Puritanical sign of disownment, is shown through the author's tone and diction as a beautiful, gold and colorful piece. Pearl, Hester's child, is portrayed Puritanically, as a child of sin who should be treated as such, ugly, evil, and shamed. The reader more evidently notices that Hawthorne carefully, and sometimes not subtly at all, places Pearl above the rest. She wears colorful clothes, is extremely smart, pretty, and nice. More often than not, she shows her intelligence and free thought, a trait of the Romantics. One of Pearl's favorite activities is playing with flowers and trees. (The reader will recall that anything affiliated with the forest was evil to Puritans. To Hawthorne, however, the forest was beautiful and natural.) "And she was gentler here [the forest] than in the grassy-margined streets of the settlement, or in her mother's cottage. The flowers appeared to know it" (194) Pearl fit in with natural things. Also, Pearl is always effervescent and joyous, which is definitely a negative to the Puritans. Pearl is a virtual shouting match between the Puritanical views and the Romantic ways. To most, but especially the Puritans, one of the most important members of a community is the religious leader; Arthur Dimmesdale is no exception. He was held above the rest, and this is proven in one of the first scenes of the book. As Hester is above the townspeople on a scaffold, Dimmesdale, Governor Wilson, and others are still above her. But, as the reader soon discovers, Arthur Dimmesdale is his own worst enemy. He hates himself and must physically inflict pain upon himself. "He thus typified the constant introspection wherewith he tortured, but could not purify, himself" to never forget what he has done (141). To Dimmesdale, it is bad that Hester is shown publicly as a sinner, but people forget that. What is far worse than public shame is Dimmesdale's own cruel inner shame. Knowing what only he and Hester know, the secret eats away at every fiber of Dimmesdale's being. As the Puritans hold up Dimmesdale, the Romantics level him as a human. The Scarlet Letter is a myriad of allegorical theories and philosophies. Ranging from Puritanic to Romantic, Nathaniel Hawthorne embodies his ideas to stress his Romantic philosophies through Pearl, Hester, and Dimmesdale throughout all of this.
